SEND - Local Offer

The purpose of a local offer is to inform parents/carers regarding the local services available for children with SEND and how to access them.  Please call the nursery for further information on 01245 348159 or we would be happy to welcome you into the office.

How is the setting able to identify if young children require extra help and what their parents/carers should do if they think their child may have special educational needs or disabilities?

It is the key person’s role to ensure that our care is tailored to individual needs from day one and they will look to gain as much information from parents and carers as possible during settling in visits.  Parents and carers have invaluable knowledge of their child in their home environment and in a variety of situations, so we encourage them to voice any concerns about their learning or development as soon as possible so that we can provide the required care and support.  They are also able to provide information that may affect a child’s behaviour, progress or developments such as a new baby, change of carer or family bereavement.

Key persons are responsible for observing, assessing and planning children’s learning to meet their individual needs and use the non-statutory Early Years Outcomes as a guide to making best-fit judgements about whether a child is showing typical development for their age, may be at risk of delay or is ahead for their age.

Where a child appears to be behind expected levels or where a child’s progress gives cause for concern, their key person considers all of the information about the child’s learning and development.  This information is brought together and discussed with the child’s parents/carers, with the advice of our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO). The child’s views will be acknowledged as part of this process.

How will the nursery support children’s learning and development?

The key person will lead a graduated approach with four stages of action: assess, plan, do and review, supported by our SENCO.  All parties will agree the outcomes they are seeking for the child, the support to be put into place, the expected impact of progress, development and behaviour and an agreed date for review.

Where there is a need for more specialist expertise to identify the nature of the child’s needs, or to determine the most effective approach, specialist teachers, educational psychologists or health, social services or other agencies may need to be involved.

How The Stables Nursery supports the wellbeing of young children with SEND.

The children’s safety is of the utmost importance and we have a trained Health and Safety Manager who oversees our procedures and practices.  In addition to the nursery risk assessment and daily check sheets we complete individual risk assessments for those children with special educational needs or those with a long term medical condition, to identify additional safety considerations.

In terms of medication only the key person, trained to Level 3, is permitted to administer medicine. Nothing is administered without parental consent and we have an administering medicine procedure that is followed.

All Team Members are qualified in Early Years and Education and Teaching. A high percentage of our staff has received first aid training and all staff have at least Level 1 safeguarding certificates.  Our SENCO presents at every staff meeting, to ensure that all are aware of the latest SEN guidelines.

How The Stables Nursery train their staff in supporting your children with SEND.

Our SENCO works closely with all practitioners in the setting.  She has responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the setting’s SEN policy, and for coordinating provision across the setting; and for supporting colleagues in all aspects of their work with children with SEN. The SENCO’s advice and support to colleagues is integral to each stage of the cycle of action: assess, plan, do, review.

What specialist services and expertise are available at, or can be accessed by the nursery?

Our SENCO works closely and meets regularly with the area SENCO who is an important source of advice and support to the setting.  We have links with the local authority with regards to liaising over individual children, securing sufficient expertise and experience on SEN and disability locally and how funding can support the setting in meeting children’s special educational needs.

We also have links with a range of professional with whom the SENCO can consult such as health visitors, specialist teachers, speech therapists and physiotherapists.  Parental permission will always been obtained before consulting with outside agencies.

How accessible is the nursery environment

We have a large car park next to the nursery so that parents/carers can park safely.  All of the setting is on one level so it is easily accessible.  We also have one demountable on site which has stairs and a ramp.   We install support bars where necessary to provide further assistance.

We carry out an individual risk assessment for each child with special educational needs, a disability or long term medical condition to ensure that our environment meets their needs, and follow the advice from outside professionals.
